National Nothing Day was proposed in 1973 by a newspaper columnist named Harold Pullman Coffin. He was tired of the sheer number of commemorative holidays and "awareness days" clogging up the calendar.
He established January 16 as a day to celebrate nothing. No parades. No cards. No special meals. Just 24 hours of existing.
Ironically, by creating a day to protest holidays, he created a holiday. But we thank him for it.
The Big Why: We celebrate because in a culture of "Hustle," doing nothing is an act of rebellion.
