This Tuesday, January 20, is National Penguin Day.
It is arguably the cutest holiday of the year. Who doesn't love a bird that wears a tuxedo 24/7 and slides on its belly to get to work?
But beyond the Happy Feet vibes, this day actually serves a purpose.
A Little History:
There are actually two holidays dedicated to these flightless birds. World Penguin Day is in April (marking their migration), but National Penguin Awareness Day is held on January 20th.
Why January? Because right now, it is summer in Antarctica. It is peak activity time for our friends in the South Pole. This day was created to raise awareness about their shrinking habitats—penguin populations have declined nearly 60% in the last few decades due to climate change.
So, how do we honor the masters of the ice on a random Tuesday?
We learn from them. Here is how to channel your inner Penguin.
Stop the Waddle. Start the Party: Meet Manny, the Party Penguin

Every good celebration needs a leader, and here at On Many Occasions, that's Manny. He's our official Party Penguin, and he takes his job seriously (which means he doesn't take much else seriously). Manny is the friendly, feathered reminder that you don't need a perfect plan to have a perfect time. He shows up to lead the charge on the quirky, silly days—like today! If Manny can waddle his way to a good time, you can certainly find an excuse to pause, look up from your to-do list, and celebrate something small. He’s here to remind you that even the smallest moments are worth a happy dance.
1. The "Pebble" Tradition (A Romantic Gesture)
Did you know that male Gentoo penguins don't give flowers or chocolates? They search the entire beach for the smoothest, most perfect pebble. When they find it, they present it to their chosen partner. If she accepts it, they are mates for life.
-
The Activation: You don't need a diamond to show someone you care today.
-
The Move: Find a small, meaningful token for your partner or best friend. A smooth stone from a walk, a marble, or even a [Pebble-shaped Paperweight]. Leave it on their pillow with a note: "I'd pick this pebble for you." It is arguably more romantic than roses because it requires effort, not just a credit card.
2. The "Tuxedo" Dinner
Penguins are always dressed for a black-tie event.
We have been wearing sweatpants for all of January. Let’s switch it up.
-
The Family Activity: Have a "Formal Tuesday."
-
The Rules: Everyone has to wear black and white to the dinner table. Even the toddler. Even the dog.
-
The Menu: Serve "Black and White" food. (Think: Oreos for dessert, Black Bean pasta with Alfredo sauce, or just a really good dark chocolate cake).
3. The "Huddle" Strategy
Emperor penguins survive temperatures of -40°F by huddling together in a massive scrum, rotating from the outside to the inside to share warmth.
-
The Vibe: If your house is freezing (or you're just feeling the January blues), build a Mega Fort.
-
The Setup: Pull all the blankets into the living room. Turn off the big lights. Watch a documentary like March of the Penguins or the BBC’s Frozen Planet.
-
The Tech: Upgrade your viewing experience with a [Mini Portable Projector]. Project the movie onto a sheet or the ceiling so you can watch while lying flat on your back... just like a penguin sliding on ice.

4. Support the Habitat
If you want to make a real impact, consider "adopting" a penguin through the World Wildlife Fund (WWF).
It makes for an incredible gift for kids—they usually get a plush toy and a certificate, and the money goes toward conservation efforts in the Southern Hemisphere.
Stay Cool.
The penguin teaches us two things:
-
You can survive anything if you stick together.
-
It’s always important to look sharp.
Waddle through your Tuesday with confidence!
Happy National Penguin Day!
