This Friday, January 23, is National Pie Day.
Not to be confused with "Pi Day" (3.14) in March, which involves math.
This holiday involves zero math. It only involves butter, sugar, and fruit.
In the middle of a cold January, this is the "Warm Hug" holiday we all need. Here is how to make the most of it.
A Little Slice of History
Why do we celebrate Pie in January?
You can thank the American Pie Council (yes, that is a real organization, and yes, we want to work there). They founded National Pie Day in 1986 to commemorate the APC’s 75th anniversary.
Their goal was simple: To preserve the heritage of pie-making.
And it worked. Pie has been a staple of human history since the ancient Egyptians, though early "pies" were mostly meat fillings in inedible reed crusts.
Luckily, we have evolved. We now have Graham Cracker crusts. Thank goodness.
3 Ways to Activate "Pie Mode"
1. The "Store-Bought Switcheroo" (Low Effort)
Let’s be real—it’s a Thursday. You might not have time to weave a lattice crust from scratch.
-
The Move: Buy a high-quality frozen pie or pick one up from a local bakery.
-
The Magic: Heat it up. Serve it on a real plate (not a paper towel) with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
-
The Tip: Dust a little fresh cinnamon or nutmeg on top of the ice cream. It makes a $5 pie look like a $20 dessert.
2. The Family Bake-Off (Medium Effort)
If you want to create a core memory, get the kids involved.
-
The Move: Make "Hand Pies."
-
The Magic: Buy pre-made refrigerated pie crust. Let the kids use cookie cutters to punch out shapes. Fill with a spoon of jam, seal the edges with a fork, and bake.
-
The Gear: This is the perfect time to break out the Personalized Family Aprons. (Nothing says "I made this" like flour all over a custom apron).
3. The Savory Surprise (Dinner Hack)
Pie doesn't have to be dessert.
-
The Move: Chicken Pot Pie or Shepherd's Pie.
-
The Magic: It’s comfort food that feeds a crowd. Plus, eating pie for dinner technically counts as celebrating.
Why We Love This Holiday
January is often about restriction—diets, budgets, and resolutions.
National Pie Day is a gentle reminder that joy is an ingredient, too.
So, go ahead. Have a slice. Manny (our head Penguin) insists.
