Why We Celebrate: A Curious History

National Trivia Day was founded in 1980 by Robert L. Birch, a librarian who wanted to encourage people to "collect" knowledge.

It wasn't a coincidence that the holiday took off. Just one year later, in 1981, the board game Trivial Pursuit was released, sparking a worldwide obsession with pie pieces and obscure geography questions.

The word "Trivia" actually comes from the Latin trivium (meaning "place where three roads meet"). In ancient times, it meant something commonplace. Today, it means the exact opposite: specialized, weird, and wonderful facts.

The Big Why: We celebrate because curiosity keeps your brain young. And also, beating your family at a quiz game feels amazing.
