This Monday, February 16, is Presidents' Day.
It is arguably the most confusing holiday on the calendar.
Is it George Washington’s birthday? (Technically, yes).
Is it Abraham Lincoln’s birthday? (Sort of).
Is it just a random Monday that the government chose so we could all buy discounted mattresses? (Also yes).
Originally, this day was "Washington's Birthday" (Feb 22).3 But thanks to the Uniform Monday Holiday Act of 1968, Congress moved it to the third Monday in February to give workers more three-day weekends.4
So, while history purists might be annoyed, we are grateful for the extra day of rest.+1
Here is how to win the long weekend without getting overwhelmed by furniture commercials.
The "Cherry Tree" Tradition
We all know the myth: Young George Washington chopped down a cherry tree and couldn't tell a lie about it.
Historians tell us this story was likely invented by a biographer to sell books, but that doesn't mean we can't eat the pie.
The Move: Skip the grocery store bakery.
-
The Upgrade: If you are off work this Monday, make a Rustic Galette.
-
It’s easier than a pie (no crimping!). You just roll out dough, pile cherries in the middle, and fold the edges over messily. It looks artisanal and tastes patriotic.
The "Adulting" Sales
Let’s address the elephant in the room: This weekend is the Super Bowl of "Boring Purchases."
Retailers use this holiday to clear out inventory.5
If you have been putting off buying the un-sexy stuff, do it today.
-
The List:
-
Mattresses: It’s a cliché for a reason. You can save 40-50%.
-
Winter Coats: Spring is coming, so parkas are on clearance.
-
Appliances: If your dishwasher is making a weird noise, this is the weekend to replace it.
The Read: You Never Forget Your First
If you want to learn about George Washington without falling asleep, you need a biography that feels fresh.
-
The Vibe: It’s a biography written by a woman (a rarity in presidential history) that strips away the marble statue myth and shows you the actual human man. It is funny, sharp, and surprisingly gossipy.

The Reflection: What is Leadership?
We are living in loud times.
This Monday, whether you are working or relaxing, take a second to think about what leadership looks like in your own life.
It isn't always about being the loudest voice in the room. Sometimes, as Lincoln proved, it’s about listening. And sometimes, as Washington proved, it’s about knowing when to step away.
Enjoy the Bonus Day.
Sleep in. Eat a slice of cherry pie. Buy a vacuum cleaner at 30% off.
That is the American Dream.
Happy Presidents' Day!
